Today, with friends across northern Maine, in Canada, and as far as Louisiana, we celebrate a rich and vibrant culture. In the early seventeenth century, French settlers began forming communities in what is today Nova Scotia. Centuries later, after trials and tragedy, some of their descendants found a new home in the St. John Valley. Acadian culture blends a commitment to tradition and a long history of adaptation.

UMFK celebrates the French heritage of the St. John Valley through French courses, the springtime sucrerie, and participation in the annual parade in Madawaska (come see us on Sunday!). Since 1990, this has also been the home of the Archives acadiennes/Acadian Archives, New England's premier center for the study of Acadian history and culture. The Archives serve UMFK students and the wider community as a historical and genealogical research center, a collecting institution, and a cultural hub.

To all of our Acadian friends, bonne fête!

This week, UMFK faculty and students are at the Ecological Society of America Conference in Baltimore. Forestry students Nick Alpeza (pictured here) and Tatiana Arce are presenting on research they've conducted as part of their studies. The opportunity to attend and present at industry-wide events is just one perk of LIFE at UMFK!
