Neil Thompson, PhD and Caroline Kanaskie, PhD, UMFK forestry faculty members, discovered a case of emerald ash borer beetles in Fort Kent while visiting a staff member’s home earlier this month.

The emerald ash borer is a metallic green beetle. As a larvae, it feasts on the phloem of ash trees, disrupting nutrient flow. Left untreated, this leads to eventual tree death.

Learn more about the emerald ash borer and treatment options here: https://www.maine.gov/dacf/mfs/forest_health/invasive_threats/eab/documents/ash-treatment-guide.pdf

Even without the snow, Lonesome Pine Ski Trails is beautiful! The small town ski area is the backdrop to the UMFK campus. In the winter, students are able to enjoy free skiing (night skiing, too!) on Wednesdays. The Fort Kent Outdoor Center is also only 6 minutes from campus and students can enjoy world class Nordic skiing and snowshoeing adventures there as well.

A look back at our Fish River Falls hike from earlier this summer. 🌿💦 One of Fort Kent’s hidden gems, with rushing water and peaceful forest views, the falls make it easy to appreciate the beauty of the area. #FishRiverFalls #FortKentMaine #UniversityOfMaineAtFortKent #SummerHike #UMFK_Life
