The University of Maine at Fort Kent Board of Visitors is encouraging the public to attend a Business Breakfast featuring a panel on school regionalization in the Upper St. John Valley. The breakfast will take place on Friday, December 8th at 7:30 a.m. in the Nadeau Hall conference room on the UMFK campus.
The panel will share information regarding the recent Tri-District Strategic Planning Initiative which included MSAD #27, MSAD #33, and the Madawaska School Department.
In September, these three school districts completed a year-long strategic planning process which focused on examining the demographic, fiscal, and educational realities of these communities and how those would impact education.
The plan that came from this process has made the development of a single, shared high school in these three districts a priority. The plan also rolls out other priorities related to shared services, educational reform, the regionalization of adult education programs, and others.
As the planning process was moving ahead, the Maine Department of Education announced a number of rounds of grants which encourage regionalization of schools in rural Maine and which provided incentive monies to begin the work of regionalization.
One of these grants, for which the Tri-District is a finalist among other state regions, will fund the construction of a new high school that will focus on a grades 9-16 approach which an includes integration with career and technical education, higher education, and workforce and community partnerships.
The panel participants at the breakfast will include Benjamin Sirois, Gisele Dionne, and Lisa Bernier; superintendents of MSAD #27, the Madawaska School Department, and MSAD #33, respectively. Also on the panel will be Scott Voisine, Strategic Planning Consultant for the Tri-District Strategic Planning process.
