Norwich University got the first win of the Husson Classic with a 5-0 victory over the UMFK women's soccer team Saturday afternoon in Bangor, Maine.
Norwich’s Karissa Doyon settled a loose ball in the box following a long throw-in and chipped the ball over Lady Bengal keeper Liz Morneault (Fr., Eagle Lake, Maine) for the first goal of the game. Nine minutes later, Doyon scored her second goal unassisted.
Norwich would add a goal of a 18yrd direct kick and an own goal on a defensive miscue which found the back of the UMFK net for a 4-0 half time advantage. Liz Morneault started in goal for sister Mindy Morneault (Sr., Eagle Lake, Maine) who missed the game for personal reasons.
Norwich added early second half insurance just two minutes in when they converted a direct kick just outside of the box. Although UMFK had many scoring chances in the second half and managed 12 shots on goal, they were frustrated for much of the day and could not put the ball into the net. Their best scoring opportunity came from a shot by Whitney Sinclair (Jr., Dexter, Maine) that hit the side post and rolled across the mouth of the goal.
Nicki Hunsicker had 9 saves for the Cadets while Morneault recorded 5 saves for UMFK.
