Singers/Songwriters, “The Billies,” will perform at a coffee house in the Bengal’s Lair on the campus of the University of Maine at Fort Kent on Friday, September 28 at 7 p.m. General admission to the event is $5. Tickets are available at the door. UMFK students will be admitted free of charge. The Billies are: Chrisie Santoni (lead vocals, guitar) and Catfish Tortuga (percussion, harmony vocals).
Chrisie is an award-winning songwriter who in 2003 won the Grand Prize in the Unisong Songwriting Contest and placed 1st Runner-Up/Adult Cotemporary in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, both for her song “Mona Lisa.” In October 2004, Chrisie was the lone American chosen to go to Prague, Czech Republic, on an all-expense paid trip to sing her song “It's All Inside,” as part of the Universetalent Songwriting contest.
Chrisie and Catfish have been pounding the musical pavement in the Northeast region for several years, providing intimate performances, peppered with a healthy splash of levity. "We love what we do" states Catfish. "Our set-up encourages spontaneity and improvisation. We're not locked into any rigid format. Oftentimes, people in the audience will throw topics at us and we'll come up with songs relating to their subjects right on the spot. It's all about having fun for us and people we play for."
Musically speaking, Chrisie Santoni is a proven winner when it comes to crafting a song. Known for her catchy vocal hooks, strong and direct guitar work, and absolutely one-of-a-kind voice, Chrisie brings originality, uniqueness, sociability whenever she plays.
Catfish Tortuga keeps the beat going with a host of shakers, bells, bongos, a dumbek, tambourine, cowbell, handclaps, and anything else that keeps peoples' toes tapping and heads bobbing. He also provides silky-smooth harmony vocals paired with Chrisie.
