The University of Maine at Fort Kent athletics department is inviting alumni and community members to join them during "Come to Campus Days" to show support for the Bengal soccer teams as they take to the field for five games in two days.
The Lady Bengals will open the action packed weekend of competitive athletic events against St. Joseph's College of Vermont at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 18 and the men's team will take on St. Joseph's College at 3:00 p.m.
"The Alumni Association will be having a Bengal BBQ during the games. Game attendees are encouraged to not only bring their team spirit but an appetite as well," said Emery "Leggs" Labbe, UMFK Alumni Association board member.
Action will continue on Sunday, September 19 when soccer players from the past come together for the annual alumni game at 10:00 a.m. on Alumni Memorial Field. All past players are welcome to come.
Both men's and women's teams will take the field again on Sunday beginning at 12:00 noon when the women battle Sunrise Conference opponent Lyndon State College of Vermont. The Lady Bengals lost to Lyndon State last year in the conference finals. Following the women's game, the men will continue defense of their 2003 Sunrise Conference Championship title as they take on Lyndon State College at 2:00 p.m.
"The athletic program has grown tremendously in the past years, and it is great to have alumni who have made indelible contributions to their sports come back to campus and see the progress that has been made. We would not be where we are now as an athletic program or an institution without the influence of these exceptional student-athletes inside and outside of the athletic spectrum. We strongly encourage not only all past athletes but alumni and fans as well to come and cheer on this years' edition of Bengals," said Eric Werntgen, assistant athletic director.
The soccer coaching staff at UMFK this fall includes Melik Khoury, head men's soccer, Dave Minzy, assistant men's, Lucas Levesque, head women's soccer, and Tracie Hobbs, assistant women's.
The entire athletic department and UMFK family encourage community participation in the upcoming "Come to Campus Days" events.
