UMFK's Newman Club plans activities for the year ahead

October 3, 2003

Students involved in the Newman Club at the University of Maine at Fort Kent recently met to establish the organization for another year of service on campus.

The Newman Club is composed of interested UMFK students whose purpose is to improve the quality of life on campus through activities and events involving spiritual and personal development.

Following introductions, participants in the meeting discussed possible projects and activities they wanted the Newman Club to sponsor. They brainstormed activities in three different areas.

Ideas were placed on newsprint and discussed and prioritized to create this semester's calendar of events.

Prioritized ideas include: spirituality, Bible study and sharing, praise and worship service, and random acts of kindness sharing, which will be facilitated every three weeks at the group's regular meetings.

A retreat at the Christian Life Center in Frenchville is being planned for October.

In addition, an "Emotion of the Week" with a relative Bible verse will be posted on the organization's campus bulletin board weekly.

Guest speakers are scheduled to speak to the student body about alcohol awareness and its negative consequences and what premarital sex does to a student's self-esteem.

In November the Newman Club will host a praise and worship concert featuring a local music group and December 18 will be the day for a "Jesus Birthday Party".
