The University of Maine at Fort Kent intramural sports program is reaching out to local community residents to join in a Valley volleyball tournament planned for Saturday, November 4 in the University Sports Center.
Jason Gayne, the student intramural program coordinator at UMFK and staff member Andrew Marquis are organizing the event and looking for community teams interested in joining in the tournament along with groups from the college campus.
"We had a great turnout at the last tournament and everyone had lot of fun. We area hoping for that again it is just a great way to get the UMFK community and the Fort Kent community together for a bit of fun," said Gayne.
In addition to town and gown coming together, the tournament is also designed to showcase a sport that does not enjoy the same popularity in the region as basketball and soccer.
"Volleyball is a sport that you don't hear much about. We want to expose it more in Fort Kent and throughout the Valley," said Marquis.
The tournament is open to all UMFK students and members of the public age 18 and older.
Check-in and warm-up begins at 9 a.m., following the captain's meeting at 10 a.m. then the volleyball tournament at 10:30 a.m.
Teams will consist of five to nine players and must include at least two female players on the court at all times. The teams can be representative of UMFK students or community members or a mix of both.
Participation in the Valley volleyball tournament is free to UMFK students. A $5.00 registration fee will be charged to participating community members. Prizes will be awarded to the winning team.
