The University of Maine at Fort Kent men’s soccer team continues its winning ways and its climb up in the national polls. The Bengals now are ranked #10 in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) weekly poll, which was released Tuesday evening in Kansas City, Missouri.
The Bengal men were ranked #22 in the NAIA pre-season poll released in mid-August and have moved steadily upward in each subsequent weekly poll released since play began in early September.
Coach Bill Ashby’s men’s team is one of only two public institutions ranked in the NAIA Top 25 poll. The other public institution, Auburn University Montgomery (Alabama), is coached by UMFK alumnus and 2008 UMFK Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, Wulf Koch.
The 8-0-0 Bengals defeated the University of Maine at Machias 7-1 this past weekend in their only game of the week. UMFK continues to the lead the nation in several team and individual statistical categories and now have won 26 consecutive regular season contests. The team has given up only two goals thus far this season.
The Bengals travel to Vermont this weekend for Sunrise Conference games versus the College of Saint Joseph (1-3-0 conference play/ 1-4-0 overall) on Saturday and Vermont Tech (1-3-0 conference play / 3-3-0 overall) on Sunday.
UMFK Athletic Director and Men’s Soccer Coach, Bill Ashby, took the 2007 men’s squad to its first-ever NAIA National Tournament last season. The Bengal men were defeated in the second round and finished the season ranked #19 in the national poll. The 2007 team finished the season with a record of 21-1, including a perfect Sunrise Conference record of 20-0.
