22 UMFK student nurses honored at pinning ceremony

Twenty-two University of Maine at Fort Kent nursing students received their nursing pin, signifying their official entrance into the profession, at a ceremony held on May 5 on the UMFK campus.

The ceremony, which recognized the nursing program's 20th graduating class, also honored a class equal in size to the largest-ever in the history of the bachelor of science in nursing program at UMFK. In 1996, 22 students also received their nursing pin.

"The pinning ceremony marks a significant milestone for these 2005 nursing graduates and our 20th graduating class," said Rachel Albert, director of UMFK's division of nursing to the nearly 100 people attending the event. "Your school days are over; however, the pinning ceremony is a rite of passage into the profession of nursing and a reminder to everyone of nursing's well-found historic promise to serve others. The ceremony also symbolizes advanced knowledge and opportunity to develop further in one's nursing role. The pin identifies you as a graduate from the UMFK BSN program, which helps to build trust with your clients."

The theme for this year's pinning ceremony, which coincided with the theme for national nurses' week, was Nurses: Many Roles, One Profession.

"The theme is fitting for this event, and provides us with a golden opportunity to celebrate the achievements of those entering the profession or who are now continuing in the profession as BSN graduates," said Albert.

Keynote speaker for the ceremony was Jane Dailey, vice president of implementation services for Broadlane.

Broadlane is a private company that delivers innovative business services to healthcare providers, enabling them to reduce costs and improve operational performance in the United States.

Prior to her position at Broadlane, Dailey was vice president for nursing at Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle.

The keynote speaker also had a personal connection with the graduating class. Her daughter Ginger Lyon, an RN nursing student at UMFK was a member of the graduating class.

In her presentation, Dailey challenged the bachelor of science in nursing degree recipients to strive for excellence.

"Nurses are needed. Nurses are shaping what is going to happen. Today marks the opening of a new door," said Dailey. "People will trust you with their fears, their secrets, the things that make them the most vulnerable. That is a heavy responsibility. Use it wisely and always listen."

In addition to Dailey's speech, two individuals were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the nursing profession.

John Labrie of Fort Kent, director of education at Northern Maine Medical Center, was honored with the 2005 Nursing Alumnus Award, and Virginia Pinkham, a retired nurse, who until recently resided in Ashland, was named the recipient of the Community Leader Award.

Also honored were the on-site nursing supervisors from hospitals who provided clinical guidance to nursing students over the past year.

The ceremony concluded with each graduate receiving their pin and a group recitation of the Nightingale pledge, during which each nurse committed to upholding the highest standards of the nursing profession.
