IT'S A BUSY WEEK OF HONORS AND COMMENCEMENT AT UMFK Nurse pinning ceremony; senior class awards convocation & graduation of 235 students on the schedule

Two-hundred-thirty-five students will receive degrees at the 127th commencement exercises at the University of Maine at Fort Kent next Saturday, May 9, 2009 in the University’s Sports Center.

University President Dr. Richard W. Cost will preside over ceremonies that will confer 208 bachelor and 29 associate degrees.

Poet, teacher and writer, and Dresden, Maine resident, Lewis Turco will receive an honorary degree during commencement.  Turco also will deliver the commencement address to the graduates. Fort Kent native and Town Manager, Don Guimond, will receive the University’s Distinguished Service Award in recognition for his years of service to the University and to the greater Fort Kent area community. Other events that will take place during the week include:


  • Nurse Pinning Ceremony on Thursday, May 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. in Fox Auditorium
  • Senior Class Banquet & Awards Convocation on Friday, May 8 at 5:30 p.m. in the University’s Sports Center
  • Mother’s Day Brunch at Nowland Hall from 10 a.m. to noon prepared by Aramark Catering.  Cost is $12 per person; $7 for graduates; $5 for children under 12; and complimentary to all mothers.  Reservations are strongly recommended.  834-7545.


The UMFK Emergency Management Team continues to closely monitor the evolving H1N1 influenza (“swine flu”) outbreak in Maine and Canada.  There currently are no suspected or probable cases in our community.  University operations and scheduled activities and events will continue, as usual.  If local conditions change, faculty, staff and students will be notified and the UMFK website will be updated, accordingly.
