Maine state Representative John L. Martin (Eagle Lake) has been named as the director of the University of Maine at Fort Kent's Center for Rural Sustainable Development (CRSD).
The announcement was made on May 15 by UMFK President Wilson G. Hess at the campus' annual end of the academic year campus retreat, attended by the university's faculty and staff.
Martin is an assistant professor of Political Science at UMFK, where he has been a member of the faculty since 1977. He also serves as executive assistant to the president.
The CRSD envisions a region of resilient, durable and prosperous communities in northeastern Maine, and beyond. The Center's mission is to guide sustainability efforts by providing academic resources and quality information for improving lives and livelihoods and safeguarding cultural and natural heritage for the future.
To foster regional sustainable development, the CRSD believes that citizens must be empowered with high-quality information and well-developed technical capabilities. It is, therefore, necessary for the center to:
