Starting this fall students interested in computer applications at the University of Maine at Fort Kent will have the opportunity to take a different route in their studies with the addition of a new web development concentration.
This concentration will give students the ability to learn the latest commercial technologies for developing high-impact and visually appealing web sites and internet programs.
There is a focus on state-of-the-art development tools including Macromedia Flash and Dreamweaver, Microsoft.NET and SQL Server, Java and Oracle.
"The idea is to develop curriculums that coincide with the wants and needs of the students," said Tony Gauvin assistant professor of electronic commerce.
The target student for this program is one who is enamored of technology and the internet and wants a career as a web designer, web master or internet programmer.
The current computer application major prepares students for careers in a variety of occupations that utilize computers. Hands-on experience further prepares students for computer related careers from programmers to systems analysts.
The students enhance their education by selecting a concentration area within their major.
UMFK's bachelor's degree in computer applications program is designed to teach the student all about computers and computer programming.
The program is founded on a hybrid computer science curriculum that has an added feature that makes its graduates even more desirable to employers. They can choose to customize their education by selecting one of the many concentrations available and with the addition of web development students have even more to choose from.
UMFK currently offers a variety of different concentrations that go along with the computer applications major including business, geographic information systems (GIS), information assurance/security, math and science, education, and allied health.
"We need to develop programs that are more in-tune to the interests of the students as well as the demand of the job market," added Gauvin.
