The University of Maine at Fort Kent, celebrating "Homecoming" and the Greater Fort Kent Area Chamber of Commerce, celebrating its “Scarecrow Festival,” are joining forces to organize a parade on Saturday, September 19, at 11 a.m. in downtown Fort Kent.
Invitations to participate in the parade were recently mailed to area businesses, marching bands, pageant queens and civic organizations. Interested individuals are encouraged to contact UMFK at 834-7557 for more information, or to register.
Line-up for the parade will begin at 10:15 a.m. at the Fort Kent Courthouse on Market Street. The parade entries will depart from the district courthouse and will proceed north on Market Street to East Main Street. Entries will then follow Main Street to the Circle K (former Irving Mainway) proceeding through the parking lot behind Circle K and follow Elm Street until it intersects with Main Street. The parade will then make its way up Monument Square and down Pleasant Street to the University, where it will end.
Judging of the parade entries will take place at Daigle and Houghton, Inc. on Market Street. The awards ceremony will follow at the UMFK President's House on Pleasant Street, as entrants pass by.
The parade will have a traditional "Scarecrow” theme. Participants are encouraged to incorporate this theme in their entries. Organizers are hoping to make this the largest and most impressive fall event the St. John Valley has ever seen.
