The University of Maine at Fort Kent will once again offer a Nursing Discovery Camp this summer. The session will run from Monday, June 29 through Thursday, July 2.
The camp is co-sponsored by Northern Maine Medical Center and Acadia Health Education Coalition, a division of Penobscot Community Health Care / Maine Office of Rural Health and Primary Care, along with the UMFK’s Nursing Program and Academic Outreach office.
The nursing camp is intended primarily for students entering their junior and senior years of high school, although sophomores also may apply. A student interested in any aspect of the nursing profession, should consider attending.
The cost is $200 and includes materials, such as hospital scrubs, and meals and lodging. Scholarship information is available at: www.umfk.maine.edu/academics/programs/nur/camp/
Participates in the nursing camp will be introduced to all of the wonderful opportunities in nursing. They will have the chance to job shadow alongside nurses at Northern Maine Medical Center and experience college life on the UMFK campus.
The students will learn Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Certification (CPR), work with patient simulators, and learn first aid skills. While at the hospital, students will visit different departments including the emergency room, operating room, obstetrical unit, medical & surgical units and the intensive care unit.
Students will explore a profession that is both exciting and rewarding. They will learn to promote healthy living for individuals and families and become leaders in the health care team.
“Last year 15 students attended the nursing camp from across the state,” said Don Eno, coordinator of Academic Outreach at UMFK. “The University received very good feedback about the camp from the students.”
Students have commented, ‘The best part was going to the hospital to job shadow; that experience was awesome!’ and ‘Everyone was nice and friendly. I made new friends!’
Deadline for accepting applications is Saturday, May 30. Students can register on-line at: www.umfk.maine.edu/academics/programs/nur/camp/ (link no longer available) or for more information, contact Eno at (207) 834-7835.
