UMFK Crown of Maine Classic 5 on 5 Tourney to be held during holiday season

December 19, 2003

The University of Maine at Fort Kent will host the Crown of Maine Classic 5 on 5 Men's Basketball Tournament during the holiday season on the 28th of December.

The tournament will be held at the UMFK SportsCenter.

Businesses, organizations, or just buddies are encouraged to put together a team of five members. Players must be eighteen years of age or older.

Participants need only put together a team and Eric Werntgen, UMFK men's basketball coach will lead the organizing of the tournament.

Werntgen was appointed acting men's basketball coach in November after head men's basketball coach and athletic director Jim Graffam resigned to accept a position at Green Mountain College in Vermont.

Werntgen came to UMFK from Essex, Vermont in the fall of 1997 after graduating from the University of New England (formerly Westbrook College) with a bachelor's degree in American Studies. He started his college coaching career as an assistant with the men's program for two years while he earned his primary teaching certificate from UMFK.

In 1999, he was appointed the women's sports coach, under then women's head coach Jim Graffam.

Werntgen played for Coach Graffam at Westbrook College where he was part of one of the best programs in the history of Maine small college basketball. During the team's six-year existence, they won 134 games and made two trips to the NAIA Division II National Tournament.

There is an entry fee of $100 per team to participate in the tournament.

To register your team or for more information, contact Werntgen in the UMFK athletics department at 834-7828 or toll free at 1-888-879-8635, extension 7828.
