“In The Place Where I Have What It Takes,” a collection of recent art works by University of Maine at Fort Kent assistant professor of art and art education, Paul Gebhardt, will be on exhibit at the UMFK Blake Library through January 30, 2009.
An evening closing reception for the artist has been scheduled for Friday, January 30.
In his new body of work, Gebhardt explores place; both a physical and a metaphorical or imaginative place. Places in the physical world, which both inspire and invigorate give comfort and shelter from the elements. Places in the mind that renew the sprit, challenge assumptions and comfort souls during trials and tribulations.
The paintings, drawings and sculptures appear brutally physical. Intentionality and sheer determination are made visible through jagged mark making and an irregular line - made all the more intense by the choice of bold colors.
Gebhardt began teaching at UMFK in 2005 and received a Master of Fine Arts from Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine.
Gebhardt has been instrumental in theater performance and public art exhibitions in Maine, Massachusetts and Vermont. In addition to being an experienced educator, he also is a practicing artist.
The exhibit may be viewed during Blake Library hours. For more information regarding the exhibit, call Sofia Birden, gallery curator at (207) 834-7525.
