Come to Campus Days and Scarecrow Festival looking for parade entrants

August 19, 2005

The University of Maine at Fort Kent and the Greater Fort Kent Area Chamber of Commerce have joined forces to begin planning for the annual Come to Campus Days/Scarecrow Festival parade. The parade will take place on Saturday, September 17 at 11:00 a.m.

Parade participation invitations have recently been mailed out to area businesses, marching bands, pageant queens, and civic organizations. However, any other interested individuals are invited to join the parade and may register by contacting the university relations office at 834-7557 or the chamber of commerce at 834-5354.

Parade line up will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the courthouse on Market Street. The parade will wind its way down Market Street, turn onto Main Street, continue through to West Main Street until it reaches the Irving Mainway station where it will turn in the parking lot, to continue on Elm Street until it intersects with Main Street. From that point the parade route will proceed past Monument Square and onto Pleasant Street, for a finish at the University. Awards will be presented just before the finish in front of the UMFK President's residence, the Acadia House, on Pleasant Street.

The two parade themes this year will be "Scarecrow Festival" and "UMFK: Green and Gold". Parade participants are encouraged to incorporate either or both of these themes on their entries.

Along with the traditional parade festivities, the Fort Kent MOMS Club will incorporate a food drive for the Fort Kent Ecumenical Food Pantry as part of their entry. Members of the local organization are encouraging parade goers to bring non-perishable food items along with them to parade. The items will be picked up along the route, placed on the MOMS Club entry and delivered to the food pantry immediately following the parade.

Festivities will continue to take place both on campus and around town after the parade.

Family fun day activities are planned both at UMFK's Alumni Memorial Field and at Bee Jays Tavern, beginning at 1:00 p.m. Entertainment and a fun afternoon will take place for families of all ages.

Both of the UMFK men's and women's soccer teams will take the field to face off against St. Joseph's College of Vermont. The women play at 1:00 p.m., followed by the men at 3:00 p.m.

The annual UMFK Alumni and Friends Banquet kicks off the evening festivities in the SportsCenter. A social will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the banquet immediately following. Tickets for the banquet are $15 each and can be acquired through the alumni affairs office at 834-7557.
