UMFK approved as host site for Inland Search and Rescue planning course

The University of Maine at Fort Kent has received word that it is an approved host site for a session of the Inland Search and Rescue (SAR) planning course taught by the National Search and Rescue School, based at the United States Coast Guard training center in Yorktown, Virginia.

The week-long course, which will be held at UMFK between July 18 and 22 is aimed at the on-scene decision makers who need to understand how the search decisions are made in order to build confidence and support the incident commander.

It is an in-depth and comprehensive look at inland search theory and its application, with a focus on wilderness, not urban, searches.

"We are pleased to be one of the sites in the nation selected to host the SAR course. There are several sessions offered throughout the year around the country," said Donald Eno, coordinator of academic outreach at UMFK. "We expect rescue planners and professionals from various local and state agencies to attend."

There is no fee for U.S. and Canadian students directly involved in SAR planning. Students must provide their own transportation, meals and accommodations.

Rooms will be available on the UMFK campus for a fee.

Enrollment is limited and applicants will be prioritized by the National SAR School and UMFK staff.

The National SAR School is the world's premier source for search and rescue training.

The joint Coast Guard/Air Force staff provides training in oceanic, coastal, and inland search planning procedures to SAR professionals from all U.S. government agencies, volunteer SAR organizations, as well as members of the international SAR community,

Since the first class, over 30 years ago, more than 14,000 have joined the ranks of trained SAR professionals, including over 1,400 international students from 103 nations.
