UMFK to host summer ECO-CAMP

The University of Maine at Fort Kent will host a summer ECO-CAMP from Sunday, June 26 through Thursday, June 30 for high school students entering their junior or senior year. Join UMFK`s Environmental Studies faculty for five days of classroom instruction and outdoor exploration. You will explore the beautiful natural environment of the North Maine Woods by canoe and trail, while learning about ecology, water quality, and wildlife.

As an Eco-camper, you will enjoy activities such as: canoeing on the Deboullie Pond, water quality testing and aquatic ecology, monitoring local wildlife and learning about wildlife management, nature hiking to identify trees and plants, learning GPS and compass skills, studying forest ecology and forest management, as well as meet environmental professionals and learn about their careers.
At Eco-camp, you will have a chance to meet with current students and graduates to learn about a college degree in Environmental Studies. You also will have the opportunity to meet with professors and other environmental professionals to explore career options such as: Environmental scientist, Wildlife Biologist, Lab and Field Technician, Game Warden, Park Ranger, Educator, GIS Specialist, Environment Policymaker, and Forester.
Other fun activities include: geocaching, stargazing, wilderness camping, campfire, and hiking.
The first 16 applicants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. There is a non- refundable $50.00 deposit requirement. The total cost of the camp includes lodging and food. Registration deadline is Friday, May 20, 2011. Lodging arrangements can be made for parents for the night of June 26, if needed.
