UMFK Bengal athletes to be honored at April 17 banquet

University of Maine at Fort Kent student athletes, their family members, coaches, faculty, and staff will gather to honor the outstanding members of the campus's athletic teams at an awards banquet in Nowland Hall on Saturday, April 17 at 2:30 p.m.

Members of the UMFK athletic family will serve as masters of ceremony for the event. They will be joined by UMFK President Richard Cost and John Murphy, vice president for administration and interim director of athletics. Cost will extend greetings on behalf of the university and welcome the group gathered for the occasion.

John Naranja, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Northern Maine Medical Center, and the official team doctor for UMFK athletics, has been invited to be the guest speaker for the sports banquet.

Each of the UMFK coaches for men's and women's soccer and basketball, as well as the men's alpine ski coach will present highlights of their respective season and hand out individual awards to their outstanding student athletes.

Eric Werntgen, head coach for the women's soccer and men's basketball team; Melik Khoury, head coach for the men's soccer team; Lucas Levesque, head coach of the women's basketball team; and Mike Lavertu, coach of the alpine ski team will each be present to honor their top athletes.

In addition to honoring the individual athletes, the men's soccer and women's basketball teams will both be recognized for winning their respective championships in the Sunrise Athletic Conference this past season.

UMFK Athletics is just coming off its most successful year in recent history. In addition to all of the sports teams finishing with impressive records, several individual athletes earned conference recognition.
