In order to participate in classes within the University of Maine System, you need to provide proof of immunizations prior to the start of classes.

Proof of immunization is documented by a copy of your immunization record. The immunization record should be signed by a clinician or have a clinic stamp. A copy of your high school health immunization record is also acceptable.

When submitting immunization records, make sure every page of the documents submitted includes your name, student ID and birth date.

Recommendation for Mumps Vaccine

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) along with the American College Health Association have issued new recommendations for college and university students regarding the prevention of Mumps. These recommendations are in response a number of outbreaks of Mumps in Maine and in nearby Atlantic Canada.

The recommendations are as follows:

All students should have two doses of MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccine or acceptable evidence of immunity to Mumps. Other acceptable immunities would be:

  1. Birth before 1957
  2. Mumps titer with Positive Results (blood test to show immunity)

The State of Maine and the University of Maine at Fort Kent has required one dose of MMR for many years. Now one additional dose of Mumps containing vaccine is highly recommended. (Note: This recommendation may become a requirement for Fall 2008.)

If you have received only one dose, the University strongly encourages you to receive a second dose as soon as possible. In the event of an outbreak, students who do not have documentation of immunity will be at risk for the illness and may be excluded from campus until the outbreak is resolved for public health reasons.

The one dose of MMR required by the State is available, free of charge, at the UMFK Student Health Clinic. Additional recommended dosages will be available for a fee. Please contact Lois Canzoni should you need more information regarding this recommendation.
