UMFK Athletics to honor James Harvey as the first Floyd

The University of Maine at Fort Kent Athletic Hall of Fame Committee is extremely proud to announce that James Harvey from Fort Kent, Maine will be honored as the inaugural recipient of the Floyd “Red” Powell Award to be presented at the seventh annual UMFK Athletic Hall of Fame Induction dinner and ceremony, Saturday March 22 at the UMFK Sports Center in Fort Kent, Maine.

Harvey, a long-time supporter of, and contributor to, UMFK Athletics, will receive the award, which was created to honor individuals who make special contributions to the UMFK teams and student-athletes. Harvey, 38, has worked the game-clock and as the scorekeeper at all UMFK home games, and has served the men's basketball team as honorary team manager and assistant coach for the past 20 years.

The Floyd “Red” Powell Award is a newly-created award that will be presented annually by the University of Maine at Fort Kent Athletic Hall of Fame Committee to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the development and/or enhancement of UMFK Athletics and its student-athletes for an extended period of time. The award is named for Floyd Powell, academic dean, director of athletics, and coach at the Madawaska Training School. Powell served as athletic director at the University for 21 years, and coached basketball and baseball. His basketball team captured the University's first state championship during the 1935-36 season.

The Hall of Fame ceremony begins at 5 p.m. with a social followed by a banquet and awards ceremony. Tickets for the banquet are $25 per person and may be purchased through the UMFK Alumni Affairs office at (207) 834-7557.
