 June 25: The Newest Members of the UMFK Learning Community

It may officially be summer, but there is certainly no slowing of the pace welcoming new members of the University of Maine at Fort Kent learning community for Fall Semester 2021!

Here is an update on our incoming colleagues and information on some exciting new roles for familiar faces as well.

Carly Flowers, Director of Athletics

We would like to welcome Carly Flowers to the University team as Director of Athletics.  Carly comes to us from Grayson College in Denison, Texas where she most recently served as Academic Success Coach. Carly's background also includes previous posts as Head Basketball Coach and Sports Information Coordinator. She has worked with compliance to ensure NCAA eligibility and has experience with fundraising events. Carly holds a Doctorate of Education from Concordia University, Chicago, IL, a Master of Science in Allied Health from Otterbein University, Westerville, OH, and a Bachelor of Arts in Exercise Science from Baldwin-Wallace University, Berea, OH. Carly's scheduled start date is July 12th.

Mick Kaminsky, Certified Athletic Trainer

Mick has a multitude of experiences with various health professional roles within the fields of sports medicine, emergency care, orthopedics and physical rehabilitation. His most recent post was Principal Researcher for Adelic Labs, Inc. in Newton, MA and Assistant Professor of Athletic Training and Exercise Science as well as Clinical Education Coordinator, both at Lasell University School of Health Sciences also in Newton, MA. He holds a Doctor of Science, Interprofessional Healthcare Studies, from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in North Chicago, IL, a Master of Science, Exercise Science and a Bachelor of Science, Athletic Training, both from Northern Michigan University in Marquette, MI.  Mick's scheduled start date is July 15th.

Tara Kelly, Volleyball Coach/Athletic Administrative Specialist

Tara Kelly has recently accepted a part-time, fixed length appointment as our new Volleyball Coach/Athletic Administrative Specialist. Some of you may already know Tara as she served as Assistant Volleyball Coach at UMFK this past spring. She has also served as Assistant Coach at Southeastern Oklahoma State and Taft College. She is currently working on a Master of Arts degree majoring in Coaching & Athletic Administration from Southeastern Oklahoma State. She also received a Bachelor of Science degree from UMFK and an Associate of Arts degree majoring in Health & Physical Education from Taft College, Taft, CA.  Tara's scheduled start date is July 12th.

We would like to welcome Jason Guerrette as our new Director of Facilities. Jason is originally from the St. John Valley and is excited to be moving back home. He comes to us with a multitude of experiences in a variety of industries including facilities, operations, customer facing services and technical departments. In his most recent role, he served as Director of Facility Operations & Engineering, Sodexo, at Emerson Hospital located in Concord, MA. He holds a Bachelor in History degree from Southern New Hampshire University and an Associate in Electronics Technology from the University of Phoenix, Phoenix, AZ. Jason is scheduled to be on campus July 6th.

Kirsten Hallowell, Administrative Specialist, Community Education

UMFK would like to welcome Kirsten Hallowell back to our campus community. Most of you remember Kirsten from her previous role in the Community Education department and we are pleased that she has decided to return to that same role as Administrative Specialist. Kirsten holds a Bachelor of Sociology from the University of Maine at Orono, has done coursework in Early Childhood Education at Kennebec Valley Community College and is currently working on an Information & Library Science Certificate from the University of Maine at Augusta.  Kristen returned to campus on June 21st.

Kirsten Thompson, High School Partnerships Coordinator

Kirsten Thompson has graciously accepted a new role as our new High School Partnerships Coordinator in the Early College department. Kirsten currently serves UMFK as our AP4ME Coordinator/Early College Assistant.  She has also served in the capacity of Adjunct Lecturer at UMFK since 2019. In her new role, Kirsten will  manage operations related to Early College offerings at the University and balance various responsibilities related to the Rural U Early College and Concurrent Enrollment Program and AP4ME. In addition, she will work with faculty and programs to plan and develop Early College offerings to serve our student population and develop enrollment at UMFK. Kirsten is a PhD Candidate at NRES University of Northern British, Columbia. She also holds a Master of Biology degree from the University of Northern British Columbia and a Bachelor of Biology from Trinity Western University, also in British Columbia. Kirsten will be starting her new role on July 1st.

Sofia Birden, Director of Library Services

Sofia Birden, who has served UMFK as Associate Director of Blake Library since 2008 and Reference Librarian since 2001, has recently been promoted to Director of Library Services. In her new role, she will be responsible for managing and directing the library, including operations, budget, supervision and direction of library staff, meeting institutional goals, and the effective coordination of services with the rest of the campus community. Sofia holds Master of Science in Library & Information Science and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees from the University of North Texas, Denton, TX. Congratulations Sofia!
