DESCRIPTION:The University of Maine at Fort Kent Visiting Author Series will welcome NewYork Times bestselling crime novelist Paul Doiron at 6 p.m. Thursday\, Oct. 1\,in Nadeau Hall. The event is free and open to the public. \nDoiron will read from his recent work “Storm Tide\,”and discuss his writing process and career as an author. A question-and-answersession will follow the reading\, and copies of his books will be available forpurchase. \nDoiron is the author of the critically acclaimed MikeBowditch mystery series set in the Maine woods. His debut novel\, “ThePoacher’s Son\,” won both the Barry Award and the Strand Critics Award forBest First Novel. It was also nominated for Edgar\, Anthony\, Macavity\, andThriller awards\, and won the Maine Literary Award for Best Fiction of 2010. \nIn 2019\, Doiron received his second Edgar Awardnomination for “Rabid\,” a digital and audio short story featuring hischaracter\, Charley Stevens. \nA Maine native\, Doiron graduated with a degree inEnglish from Yale University and holds a Master of Fine Arts in creativewriting from Emerson College. He served as editor in chief of “Down East: TheMagazine of Maine” before stepping down to write full-time. He currently holdsthe title of editor emeritus. \nDoiron is a past chair of the Maine Humanities Counciland a former member of the Maine Arts Commission. DESCRIPTION:Join the Moosetown Riders on Saturday\, October 10\, 2026 for an afternoon and evening of great food\, live music\, raffles\, and good company in Allagash! Bash in the Gash is first and foremost a FUNDRAISING EVENT for the Moosetown Riders Snowmobile Club. Our primary fundraising effort is focused on bringing our vision of a permanent groomer garage and clubhouse to life. This facility will finally give our club a place to call home\, provide much-needed storage and protection for our grooming equipment\, and help us better serve our members\, community\, and the many snowmobilers who visit Allagash each winter. We have been fortunate to secure $121\,000 through the Maine Trails Program toward the project\, but we still have a significant funding gap to close. DESCRIPTION:The University of Maine at Fort Kent (UMFK) invites students\, faculty\, and community members to a presentation as part of its Scientific Speaker Series on October 29\, 2026. The featured guest speaker will be field ecologist and biologist Dr. Brittany Slabach. \nThe event will begin at 11 a.m. in Nadeau Hall. The talk is free and open to the public. \nDr. Slabach’s research centers on how dynamic landscapes\, environmental disturbances\, and human recreation influence wildlife communities. Her work spans a wide variety of species—including mammals\, reptiles\, and birds—utilizing field techniques such as wildlife trapping\, camera surveys\, vegetation sampling\, mapping\, and molecular techniques. \nDuring her presentation\, Dr. Slabach will discuss her passion for wildlife ecology\, highlight her scientific research\, and share her experiences studying wildlife in Maine and beyond. \nUMFK students can earn 500 Paw Points for attending the presentation. \nThis presentation is supported in part by Maine INBRE (IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence). \nFor more information\, please contact SamanthaBeaulieu\, UMFK Natural SciencesLaboratory Manager\, at samantha.beaulieu@maine.edu.
