DESCRIPTION:The University of Maine at Fort Kent (UMFK) invites students\, faculty\, and community members to a presentation as part of its Scientific Speaker Series on October 29\, 2026. The featured guest speaker will be field ecologist and biologist Dr. Brittany Slabach. \nThe event will begin at 11 a.m. in Nadeau Hall. The talk is free and open to the public. \nDr. Slabach’s research centers on how dynamic landscapes\, environmental disturbances\, and human recreation influence wildlife communities. DESCRIPTION:The University of Maine at Fort Kent Visiting Author Series will welcome NewYork Times bestselling crime novelist Paul Doiron at 6 p.m. Thursday\, Oct. 1\,in Nadeau Hall. The event is free and open to the public. \nDoiron will read from his recent work “Storm Tide\,”and discuss his writing process and career as an author. A question-and-answersession will follow the reading\, and copies of his books will be available forpurchase. \nDoiron is the author of the critically acclaimed MikeBowditch mystery series set in the Maine woods. His debut novel\, “ThePoacher’s Son\,” won both the Barry Award and the Strand Critics Award forBest First Novel. It was also nominated for Edgar\, Anthony\, Macavity\, andThriller awards\, and won the Maine Literary Award for Best Fiction of 2010. \nIn 2019\, Doiron received his second Edgar Awardnomination for “Rabid\,” a digital and audio short story featuring hischaracter\, Charley Stevens. \nA Maine native\, Doiron graduated with a degree inEnglish from Yale University and holds a Master of Fine Arts in creativewriting from Emerson College. He served as editor in chief of “Down East: TheMagazine of Maine” before stepping down to write full-time. He currently holdsthe title of editor emeritus. \nDoiron is a past chair of the Maine Humanities Counciland a former member of the Maine Arts Commission. DESCRIPTION:The Acadian Archives at theUniversity of Maine at Fort Kent will host a public lecture by Scott Brickmanat 4 p.m. on September 23. Professor Brickman will discuss his engagement withLatvian culture. \nFrom 1940 to 1991\, the small Balticcountry of Latvia\, which was established in 1918\, was occupied by the SovietUnion\, Nazi Germany\, and the Soviet Union again. During the period of foreigncontrol\, Latvian culture and the newly standardized Latvian language weresuppressed by the occupiers. Despite these challenges\, Latvian language andculture have survived. \nThis presentation will offer abrief look at how Latvians celebrate the Summer Solstice (Ligo/Jani) inLatvia’s capital city of Riga and in the third largest city\, Liepaja. Culturaltraditions\, dress\, food\, song and dance\, as well as language preservation will bediscussed. Professor Brickman will share original photos and videos of his timein both Riga and Liepaja over the past two years and may perform songs duringthe event. \n“We are honored by Scott’swillingness to share his cultural explorations with the Archives and the widercommunity\,” explains Patrick Lacroix\, director of the Acadian Archives. “We canlearn a great deal from the kind of cultural exchange that he has pursued inLatvia.” \nScott Brickman is Professor ofMusic and Education at UMFK\, where he has taught since 1997. A composer ofcontemporary classical music\, his compositions are available on Amazon\, AppleMusic\, Pandora\, and Spotify. \nThe presentation will be held atthe Acadian Archives. It will be free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:This year\, the UMFK Alumni Association will recognize the graduating classes of 1946\, 1956\, 1966\, 1976\, 1986\, 1996\, 2006\, 2001\, 2016\, and 2021.    There will be special recognition for the classes of 1976 (50 years) and 2001 (25 years).  The Association will present awards to this year’s Outstanding Alumni Award and outgoing Alumni Association Board Members. The Homecoming Brunch and Awards Ceremony is a chance to reconnect with alumni\, old friends\, and new acquaintances.
