Commencement

Additional Information

Commencement Program

The commencement program will include names of degree recipients since May 2015 and degree candidates for May 2016. It is not an official list of graduates. Programs will be distributed to the guests at the main entrance of the gymnasium at the Sports Center. Programs will be set on the chairs of the faculty and graduates.

If you are unable to attend and have indicated as such on your Application for Graduation, "in absentia" will be printed after your name indicating your absence at the ceremony.

Diplomas

Your name will be listed on your diploma and commencement program as you indicated the way you wish it to appear. Diplomas will be handed out during the Commencement Ceremonies. It is university policy that diplomas cannot be released until your award has been conferred at the graduation ceremony, therefore, we are not able to provide your diploma earlier.

If you are unable to attend Commencement Day, the student must indicate so on your Application for Graduation. Diplomas will be available for pickup after May 16, 2016 in the Registrar's Office. Diplomas may be mailed upon request when appropriate clearances have been made.

Disabilities

Graduates and guests with disabilities or those who may require special accommodations to attend either the Senior Class Banquet/Awards Convocation or Commencement Ceremony are requested to contact the Office of Facilities Management, (207) 834-7671 to ensure that special needs will be addressed.

Honors Designations

Students who maintain a high level of academic achievement during the undergraduate careers are graduated with honors. Students whose total cumulative grade point averages on all work taken (including work taken at the University of Maine at Fort Kent and elsewhere) are:

  • Summa Cum Laude - 3.80 to 4.00
  • Magna Cum Laude - 3.50 to 3.79
  • Cum Laude - 3.20 to 3.49

Coursework taken during the semester prior to May graduation will not be used in the calculation of honors.

Any questions regarding a student's academic standing and qualifications for university honors should be directed to the Registrar's Office.

Only degree candidates who are graduating with honors will wear Honor Stoles with their academic regalia. Honor Stoles will be inserted in the academic regalia packet. Like with the academic regalia, honor stoles must be returned. All candidates who are members of Alpha Chi, Nursing, or the Omicron-Psi Honor Societies may wear honor cords with their academic regalia.

Photographer

Guests are welcome to take pictures, however, you should know that a commercial photographer, Commencement Photos of Maine, will take pictures of all degree candidates as they cross the stage. We recommend that you sit where you will be most comfortable and leave the crucial shot to the pros! They offer graduates the opportunity to have quality portraits taken with absolutely no obligation to purchase. Information is mailed to the home of the student prior to graduation. This allows for graduates to order before or after graduation.
