Expectations for Students

Our students come from a variety of backgrounds. About 50% are ‘traditional’ students, those who have recently graduated high school. The other 50% are returning students, working professionals needing additional skills and knowledge, and students-at-a-distance. These students take their courses online, and can be located anywhere on Earth.

We expect all our students to be mature, rational thinkers; to respect the opinions of others, and to be polite and civil to other students, faculty, and the university. The Behavioral and Social Sciences open new pathways of knowing and understanding, and have the potential to change a person’s world.

Associates’ degree students take 60+ credits, about 2 years or 20 courses. Approximately 34% of these credits are in General Education Core courses.

Baccalaureate students take 120+ credits, which is about 4 years or 40 courses. Approximately 34 of these credits are in General Education Core; about 34 are in the specific program, 18 credits are allotted to minors or program concentrations, and electives account for the remaining credits. 45 of these credits must be in advanced or upper-level courses.

An academic course is usually 3 credits, or 4 if there is a lab requirement. 3 academic credits is the equivalent of 45 ‘seat-time’ hours, or 3 hours per week over a 15 week semester. Further, students are expected to complete an additional 90 hours, 6 hours per week per course, in doing assignments, job-shadowing, internships, or other out-of-class academic activities. Altogether, full-time enrollment is 12-18 credits/4-6 courses per semester, or 36-54 hours per week. Students with family responsibilities or with full-time employment may find a full-time load difficult to do well.

All degree programs at UMFK have core courses in the general education area, as well as programmatic courses. For most programs there is the opportunity for internships. The General Education Core covers these competencies: written and spoken communication, advanced novice competence in a non-English language and in information technology; demonstrated global awareness; the arts, literature and history; the physical sciences; and the behavioral and social sciences. Students are expected to take and pass at least one course in each area. The General Education Core consists of about 34 credits.

Required Experiential Work

Students will be expected to work within the campus and local communities. The extra-mural service learning experiences will be part of the senior evaluation, and constitute the citizenship and social responsibility requirements of the general education core.


Each student, within the first year of attending UMFK, shall select a program advisor from among the full-time faculty in the Social Sciences. The advisor will guide the career and professional choices of the student.

Techniques for Assessment

Students will be assessed both directly and indirectly. Students are to maintain a year-by-year portfolio of exemplars of their work. In the senior year, the portfolio will be reviewed by at least 2 Behavioral Sciences and/or Social Science faculty
