UMFK STUDENTS' DNA RESEARCH ADDED TO NATIONAL DATABANK

Biology students at the University of Maine at Fort Kent have added their research on soil viruses (phages) to a national DNA databank, capping a fall semester during which first-year students were engaged in a national research program.

UMFK'S POWELL HALL "GREEN" CERTIFICATION IS OFFICIAL

The University of Maine at Fort Kent has achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for its $1.4 million renovation of Powell Hall; a project incorporating many energy-savings components into the 47-year-old former dormitory.The University received credit for 29 of the 34 points it submitted for confirmation with USGBC in attaining LEED certification. LEED certification is recognized as the standard for measuring a building's sustainability. The achievement of LEED certification is the best way to demonstrate that a building project truly is "green."

The University of Maine at Fort Kent will host a community information meeting on student internship opportunities with Northern Forest Canoe Trails (NFCT), as well as NFCT's desire to develop partnerships with communities surrounding the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, on Monday, February 13 at 6 p.m. in the Nadeau Hall Teleconference Room on the UMFK campus.Roger Poor, a NFCT representative will visit the Fort Kent community to promote internship opportunities, youth programs, and to encourage youth and the community to partner with NFCT, in various ways.

UMFK to host Fiddlers' Jamboree on Sunday, February 19

The University of Maine at Fort Kent is preparing for the area's largest jam session and house party for music lovers at its annual Fiddlers' Jamboree, which will be held on Sunday, February 19 from 1 to 4 p.m. in UMFK's Fox Auditorium. The doors will open to the public at 12:30 p.m. The event is open to the public. A suggested donation of $5 for adults and ages 12 and under may attend free.

The University of Maine at Fort Kent will host the Northern District (Aroostook County) Scripps National Spelling Bee competition for 6, 7, and 8 grade students on Friday, February 10 at 6 p.m. in Fox Auditorium.
