ArecentreportcompiledandreleasedbytheMaineDepartmentofEducationandEducateMaineindicatesthatparticipantscompletingtheSt.JohnValleyCAPapartnershipbetweenUMFKMSAD27AdultandCommunityEducationtheMaineCentersforWomenWorkandCommunityandtheMaineEducationalOpportunityCenterhasdemonstratedthesecond-highestcollegeenrollmentpartici-pationrateinthestate.Accordingtothereport73learnerscompletedtheSt.JohnValleyCAPbetween2007and2011.Ofthatgroup52enrolledincollege.The71.2percentcollegeenrollmentparticipationratewasthesecond-highestinMaine.Statewidecollegeenrollmentparticipationratesrangedfromahighof77.3percentto32.1percentduringthesametime-frame.ThereportisbaseduponananalysisofcollegeenrollmentdatafromtheNationalStudentClearinghouseNSCproducedinNovember2012.TheanalysisreturnedrecordsforstudentswhoparticipatedinoneofthestatesMaineCollegeTransitionsMCTcommunitiesduringthefive-yearperiod.TheSt.JohnValleyCAPisaparticipatingprogramwithintheMCTprogram.MCTandits35sitesformacriticalcomponentofMaineseffortstodevelopanAdultCareerPathwaysworkforcedevelopmentsystem.Forty-fivepercentofMCTparticipantsduringthe2007-2011timeframewerebetweentheagesof25and44.OneofthemoreuniqueaspectsofthelocalCAPisstudentshavetheopportu-nitytocompletepartoftheirclassroomlearn-ingontheUMFKcampusthusallowingthemtoexperiencecampuslifeandservices.MCTisofferedthroughlocaladultedu-cationprogramsandarecomprehensiveprogramsofstudyleadingtoenrollmentandsuccessinapost-secondaryinstitution.Theprogramincludescareerplanningcasemanagementanddatacollectioninstructionincollegepreparationcourseworkandthedevelopmentofapeercohortandorcoach-ingsystem.MCTprovideshigh-qualitycost-effectiveandaccessiblepathwaystopost-secondaryeducationforadults.Specificallyithelpsadultswhoarestudyingtoearnhighschooldegreestotransitiontocollegepro-videspreparatorysupporttoadultswhohaveahighschooldegreebutarenotacademi-callypreparedtotakecollegecoursesandprovidescounselingmentoringandsupportservicestoenablethoseadultstosuccess-fullytransitiontocollegeandearndegrees.TheNSCreportsincludesinformationonthefieldsofstudyofabouttwo-thirdsoftheMCTalumniwhoenrolledincollege.Ofthosewithdeclaredfieldsofstudythetopfivefieldsareliberalartshealthcarebusinessvocationaltechnicalandscience.PreparingAdultLearners2TheBellTowerProjectLoginUMFKstudentsenrolledincomputerscienceandcomputerapplicationswereprovidedwithanopportunitytomeetinformationtechnologyprofessionalsandemploy-ersatanetworkingvideoreceptionheldoncampusinmid-April.ThevideoconferencewassponsoredbyProjectLoginthenewestprogramofEducateMaineabusiness-ledorganizationwhosemissionistochampioncollegeandcareerreadinessandincreaseeducationattainment.BusinessrepresentativesspokeabouttheircompanytheirrolesentrylevelIToppor-tunitiesITinternshipsandcareerpathsattheirorganizationsaswellasansweredques-tionsfromUMFKstudents.TheProjectLogininitiativeincludesinternshipopportunitiesresumepostingforstudentsinstructionaleventseducationalresourcesandanetworkofsupportdesignedtogrowthecomputertechnologyworkforce.TheFortKentvideonetworkingsessionwasthelastofaseriesofeventsheldatUniversityofMaineSystemcam-puseswithcomputersci-encecomputerengineeringandITdegreeprogramstobringstudentsandemployerstogetherwithagoalofdoublingthenumberofcomputerandtechnologydegreegraduatesinMaineinfouryears.AccordingtoU.S.DepartmentofLaborprojectionstheshortageoftrainedcomputertechnologyprofessionalsisbecominganationalproblem.TheDepartmentpredictsthattherewillbe1.4millionvacantcomputingjobsintheU.S.by2018.Usingcurrentgraduationratesonly61per-centofthosevacancieswillbefilledbyU.S.computinggraduatesandonly39percentofthosewillbefilledinthestateofMaine. TheBellTower5 heyear2013startedonabrightnoteforUMFKwhenquiteunexpectedlytheUniversityfounditselfatopalistissuedbythenationally-recognizedU.S.NewsWorldReport10CollegesWhereGraduatesHavetheLeastDebt.UMFKwasincludedamongaU.S.NewsWorldReportShortListofthetop10collegeswhereborrowersowedanaverageof10000orlessatgraduation.UMFKwasthetop-ratednationalfour-yearpublicinstitutiononthelist.Theaveragedebtloadfora2011UMFKgradu-atewasamiserly9505.TheShortListalsoincludessuchvener-ableinstitutionsasPrincetonandYaleuniversi-ties.Youmayhaveheardofthem.AtatimewhenwereadaboutcollegegraduatesbeingburdenedwithdebtitisrefreshingtoseefirmevidencethatMainespublicuniversitiesofferaffordablepathwaystoabachelorsdegreeandeconomicopportunity.ThelowdebtofUMFKgraduatesshowswhatagreatvalueandtremendousreturnoninvest-mentaUMFKeducationissaidPresidentWilsonG.Hess.Nation-widesixty-eightpercentofgradu-atesfromtheclassof2011borrowedtohelppayforcollegeaccordingtodatareportedby1033rankedcollegesina2012U.S.Newssur-vey.Onaveragethosestudentshad26220indebt.Thedebtdatausedinthesecalculationsincludesloanstakenoutbystudentsfromcol-legesfinancialinstitutionsandfederalstateandlocalgovernments.Itexcludedanyloanstakenbyastudentsparents.AMay2013CNNMoneyarticlestatedthattheaveragecollege-relateddebtofa2013graduatehasincreasedto35200whenyoucalculatestudentloanscreditcardsandmoneyowedtofamilymembers.Accordingtoseveralrecentstudiestheeffectsofrisingstudentdebthasseveralconse-quencesfeweryoungpeopleareabletoaffordtobuyahomemanycollegegraduatesdelaygettingmarriedorarehavingfewerchildrenduetofinancialconcernsmoreyoungpeopleworkoutsideoftheirmajorsandagrowingnumberofgraduatesaremovingbackhometolivewiththeirparentsaftergraduation.Noneoftheseconsequencesaresurprising.Howeverwhilecollegecostsarehighmoststudentsstillseeacollegeeducationasagoodinvestmentandmanyarewillingtogointodebttoobtainacollegedegreeiftheythinkitwillhelpthemgetahead.Collegegraduatesenjoytheirjobstoagreaterdegreeandfindtheircareerstobemoresatisfying.Accordingtoa2007CollegeBoardEducationPaysreportgraduatestendtofeelagreatersenseofsatisfactionintheircareersthanthosewithoutadegree.Unemploymentratesalsoareloweramongindividualswithdegrees.Acollegeeducationteachesstudentstoberesourceful.Collegegradsarebetterabletotransfertheirknowledgeandskillstoothertypesofjobsthanthosewithoutacollegedegree.Collegegraduatestypicallymakeabetterlivingthantherestofthepopulation.A2008U.S.Censussurveyofadults25yearsofageorolderwhoworkedfull-timefoundthatonaveragehighschoolgraduatesmadealmost34000peryear.Converselyfour-yearcol-legegraduatesaveragedbetween55500and56000peryear.Thedifferenceinyearlyincomebetweenthetwogroupswouldpayforafeaturestory6TheBellTowerThelowdebtofUMFKgraduatesshowswhatagreatvalueandtremendousreturnoninvestmentaUMFKeducationis.TTheMostAffordable
