During the months of December 2011 and January 2012, UMFK fall semester art students will have their art work on display at the University of Maine at Fort Kent's Blake Library Gallery.
In December, the gallery showcased students' work from Art 451: Painting. January will showcase students' work from Art 200: Fundamentals of Art.
The January exhibit will present students' work, which represents such techniques as linoleum prints, blind gesture drawing, positive/negative space in drawing, grid drawing, and more.
The students exhibiting in January worked on different techniques through their Art 200: Fundamentals of Art class taught by Lulu Pelletier, art lecturer, during the fall 2011 semester. As the semester progressed, the students developed new skills and learned to become comfortable with the various mediums to which they were introduced.
"I'm excited for each and every one of them, and will be proud to see their work in the Blake Gallery," said Pelletier.
The gallery will be open limited hours until classes begin again on Janurary 17. Individuals are encouraged to call Sofia Birden, gallery curator, at 834-7527 to check when the exhibit can be viewed.
The December exhibit, "In the Material," displayed completed works of art in pastels, oils, acrylics, and graphite.
In addition to the exhibit, Visual Arts Instructor Therese Provenzano and her students hosted an "Art Talk" on Wednesday, December 7 from 6 to 7:30 pm. at the gallery. The group session was free and open to the public.
During the fall semester, each student in the painting class, taught by Provenzano, was asked to choose one of four mediums: watercolors, pastels, oils, or acrylics. The students were directed to explore the medium of their choice and as Provenzano says "... explore color and what the material can do." Provenzano also said that "The class explored how one can approach developing figurative and abstract paintings."
In addition, one student, in a directed study in drawing worked with graphite to explore ideas "...resulting in representational, abstract, or imaginary outcomes."
With regard to all her students, Provenzano stated, "I am very excited about exhibiting the accomplishments of these students."
