GIS Specializations

Students who wish to acquire advanced study in geographic information systems (GIS) may do so through the GIS Minor (see the GIS Minor link). However, students in the Computer Applications major or the B.S. Environmental Studies (BSES) degree program can choose to complete a concentration or specialization, respectively.

The Computer Applications Major, GIS concentration, is an excellent option for students seeking a career as a GIS professional. Computer Apps provides a strong computer background, including programming languages so important in GIS. GIS, GPS and related courses provide hands-on experience in database management, spatial accuracy, and digital cartography critical to spatial analysis and map making. Although the concentration is listed below, visit the Computer Applications Major or contact the faculty for more detailed information.

GIS Concentration (Computer Applications)
CRN Course Credits
Cos 327 Computer Programming - Visual Basic 3 credits
For 242 Map and Airphoto Interpretation 3 credits
Geo 103 Intro to Global Positioning Systems 1 credit
Geo 280 GIS Applications I 4 credits
Geo 380 GIS Applications II 4 credits
COS Electives 6 credits

The B.S.E.S. degree program, GIS specialization, is designed to provide students with the skills needed to work as a GIS professional. Mapping and spatial and database analysis skills are essential for modern environmental regulation and environmental research. Many environmental agencies have their own GIS staff to provide maps and data analysis. Although each job may differ in its exact requirements, this curriculum provides a base of skills essential to working with geographic information systems.

GIS Specialization (B.S. Environmental Studies) (25 or more credits needed)
CRN Course Credits
Cos 111 Introduction to Computer Science 4 credits
Cos 260 Introduction to Programming 4 credits
Cos 327 Computer Programming - Visual Basic 3 credits
Cos 346 Databases 4 credits
For 242 Map and Airphoto Interpretation 3 credits
Geo 280 GIS Applications I 4 credits
Geo 380 GIS Applications II 4 credits

If there is an agency or company for which you wish to work, investigate their software and programming language needs and add them to your curriculum. Also, incorporate GIS projects into as many of your course projects as possible. For example, environmental studies students can incorporate GIS into environmental practicum and senior projects. Independent projects and internships often are available for additional experience. Speak to your advisor and the GIS faculty for experience outside the classroom.
