Summer Program

The Environmental Studies Program offers a series of field-oriented courses and expeditions every summer. Courses change each year, but usually include special courses in ecology and local botany that allow students to explore the bountiful flora and fauna of the northern Maine summer. The rivers, lakes, and forests of the North Maine Woods serve as the classroom for outdoor skills courses such as canoeing, kayaking, and wilderness first aid.

Our summer program features intensive field expeditions every summer to locations that have interesting ecological features and natural history. Each experience runs for two or three weeks, and provides three to six credits of academic credit. The destinations vary from year to year. Previous expeditions have explored Anticosti Island, St. Pierre and Miquelon, and the Gaspé Peninsula of Quebec. Future expeditions will travel to locations as diverse as Baxter Park and the Allagash Wilderness Waterway in northern Maine, and Newfoundland, Canada.
